Mike Vick Named New HC for Norfolk State
On Friday, Norfolk State announced that Michael Vick, a former NFL player, had been appointed as its new coach. Vick, 44, has never worked as a professional or collegiate coach.
In 2019, Vick was appointed as offensive coordinator by the Alliance of American Football's Atlanta Legends, but he left before coaching a game because of other obligations. In the end, he spent a season as an adviser for the group.
Vick said he would put together a group of seasoned coaching professionals to assist him in developing the program. After playing, he has mostly worked as an analyst for Fox Sports, covering the NFL for several Fox-affiliated networks and commentating on pregame shows.
The hiring of the former No. 1 NFL Draft selection is the most recent example of college programs employing applicants who have never held a coaching position on campus. Last week, North Carolina shocked the collegiate football community by replacing Mack Brown with Bill Belichick, who is considered to be among the greatest coaches in NFL history. Belichick has played in the NFL his whole career and has never been a college coach. Lets see what Vick can do.
